And the third destination of our week of travels was up the north side of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the edge of pine forests. At 6,700 feet it was high enough elevation that the nights were quite cool, and the villages were built with wood rather than mud bricks. It was such a different perspective of Africa/Tanzania to be in cooler temperatures and evergreen forests. We always enjoy the opportunities to broaden minds beyond the stereotypical perspective that all Africans live in mud huts and on savannahs or deserts. The cabins we stayed at were lovely. We had two nights there, and we figured the day would be completely tranquil listening to birds and reading and taking cooler walks. Then we woke up to see a bus load of people in matching shirts coming onto the lawn and setting up video camera equipment. They were a church gospel group from Dar es Salam (capital city) there to film their musical DVD. So much for the peace and quiet, but it did turn out to be quite fun as we just watched them singing and dancing, then we started throwing the frisbee as a family and were joined by a woman who wanted to learn to throw, then a couple kids, then others. We really enjoyed them, and they may soon form an ultimate frisbee team some day as their throws became pretty impressive.

The third day we hiked up a trail that hikers use who're going to summit Kilimanjaro. We loved smelling the familiar smells of a pine forest.
We also needed something to serve as a tree for the next day's Christmas.
